The Grand Hôtel des Alpes is a historic hotel going back to 1840. Abandoned for many years, it was an eyesore in the center of Chamonix. All that changed when the hotel was totally renovated and restored in the late 1990s. Today its beaux-arts beauty graces the town’s main pedestrian street. It has 30 rooms with wood-paneled marquetry, eiderdowns and marble baths, half with Mont-Blanc views. It offers just breakfast and afternoon tea; has a pool, Jacuzzi, spa, sauna/steam bath, and masseuse. Drinks are in the cozy bar or library, both with views of Europe’s highest peak. Katia and Jerôme enjoy sharing their Chamonix paradise; perhaps that’s why it’s #1 on Trip Advisor!
